October 24- October 28

This week in Reading we got the new sight word "we." So now the students have six words that they should be able to recognize and read: I, like, the, and, see, we. Please be reviewing these at home too. We read the book "Amelia's Show and Tell Fiesta" and "Mice Squeak, We Speak." The students learned about and listed lots of different types of descriptive words. We talked more about sensory words and practiced writing different sensory words in sentences. We had the alphafriend card Tiggy Tiger and worked on hearing the /t/ sound in words, writing the letter "T" and coming up with words that start with the letter as well. We continued to talk about the characters in stories that we read and we also discussed whether or not we liked certain books and why. We read an informational book on the animals that live in the Fort Worth Zoo, and the students really enjoyed seeing pictures of some of the animals.

This week in Science and Social Studies, Mrs. Foegelle and Mrs. Brown got some community helpers to come to school to talk to the students about what they do. They got a veterinarian, some firefighters, some police officers, and a woman who owns a restaurant to come and speak. On Monday, the students will get to walk to the dentists office to hear about his job. They have really enjoyed getting to meet some new people and to hear all the exciting things they have to tell us about their jobs!

Our letter for phonics this week was I/i. We made two different ice cream cone crafts, colored pictures that began with "I", practiced writing "I", and made a letter "I" book about the Indians. We practiced writing in complete sentences in writing this week by writing about what we are going to do on Halloween and drawing a picture to go along with it. We also worked on matching uppercase and lowercase letters and pictures that start with specific letters. The students did a great job on all their work this week!

We learned about the color brown this week and got to color our crayon book brown!

In math, we are still counting to 40, reciting the days of week and also the months of the year. We got to use a story map this week and we practiced counting linking cubes. It is the first step into addition and subtraction. We would listen to a story and put the correct amount of linking cubes on our story map, then we would either take away some or add some to it, and the count how many linking cubes we had at the end. We used the linking cubes to make different designs and also did a couple counting worksheets.

Don't forget about our Community Helper Parade on Monday! We will be walking around the school in the morning to show the other classrooms our outfits!

We are also having our Halloween Party at 2:30 and look forward to seeing those of you who can make it! It should be lots of fun!

Have a great Monday!
