October 24- October 28

This week in Reading we got the new sight word "we." So now the students have six words that they should be able to recognize and read: I, like, the, and, see, we. Please be reviewing these at home too. We read the book "Amelia's Show and Tell Fiesta" and "Mice Squeak, We Speak." The students learned about and listed lots of different types of descriptive words. We talked more about sensory words and practiced writing different sensory words in sentences. We had the alphafriend card Tiggy Tiger and worked on hearing the /t/ sound in words, writing the letter "T" and coming up with words that start with the letter as well. We continued to talk about the characters in stories that we read and we also discussed whether or not we liked certain books and why. We read an informational book on the animals that live in the Fort Worth Zoo, and the students really enjoyed seeing pictures of some of the animals.

This week in Science and Social Studies, Mrs. Foegelle and Mrs. Brown got some community helpers to come to school to talk to the students about what they do. They got a veterinarian, some firefighters, some police officers, and a woman who owns a restaurant to come and speak. On Monday, the students will get to walk to the dentists office to hear about his job. They have really enjoyed getting to meet some new people and to hear all the exciting things they have to tell us about their jobs!

Our letter for phonics this week was I/i. We made two different ice cream cone crafts, colored pictures that began with "I", practiced writing "I", and made a letter "I" book about the Indians. We practiced writing in complete sentences in writing this week by writing about what we are going to do on Halloween and drawing a picture to go along with it. We also worked on matching uppercase and lowercase letters and pictures that start with specific letters. The students did a great job on all their work this week!

We learned about the color brown this week and got to color our crayon book brown!

In math, we are still counting to 40, reciting the days of week and also the months of the year. We got to use a story map this week and we practiced counting linking cubes. It is the first step into addition and subtraction. We would listen to a story and put the correct amount of linking cubes on our story map, then we would either take away some or add some to it, and the count how many linking cubes we had at the end. We used the linking cubes to make different designs and also did a couple counting worksheets.

Don't forget about our Community Helper Parade on Monday! We will be walking around the school in the morning to show the other classrooms our outfits!

We are also having our Halloween Party at 2:30 and look forward to seeing those of you who can make it! It should be lots of fun!

Have a great Monday!

Pumpkin Patch!

This week in Reading we started a new unit which focuses on the fact that we can learn new things from books. We also talked about our five senses, practiced using them, and discussed different things that we use our different senses on. We read the story Listen, Listen about the sense of hearing and the four seasons. We also read the story My 5 Senses. We also started talking about descriptive words and sensory words. The focus letter for the week during reading time was the letter A/a. We learned a song about Andy Apple.

In Phonics this week our letter was M/m. We did our normal phonics worksheets and tests, and the students continued with their reading practices as well. We continued to work on our Teddy Bear journal and will probably finish it with it next week. Our craft for the week was making a monster!

We had a review week in math. The students practiced making patterns, counting, and going over the days of the week and the months of the year. On Tuesday, they were given a formal assessment called the TEMI. It was a timed test where the students had to flip through the pages and answer as many questions as they could before the time ran out. They did fairly well on it, for it being the first time for them to do something like that. We will do this test again later in the year.

On Wednesday we had our all-day field trip to the pumpkin patch in Elgin. We had lots of fun! It was a long bus ride, but the kids enjoyed it and they did a great job of sitting nicely in their seats. When we got to Elgin, we got to go on a Hayrack Ride, then we heard a story about a jack-o-lantern, and got to eat our sack lunches. The kids got to go into two different mazes, play on the playground, climb some hay, paint pumpkins, see some animals, and they had a tug-of-rope contest! The girls won once and the boys won once. By the time we got back to school, most of the kids were wiped out! And thank you so much to all the parents and grandparents that came with us to help out! I couldn’t have done it all without you all. Thanks again!

Letter A, apples, and applesauce!

Hey sorry I didn’t blog for last week! But I’ll let you know things we worked on last week, and then also this week too!

Last week was kind of a crazy week! We did our TPRI testing, so we had a sub in the class while I took the kids out one at a time to do the testing. You should be getting the results of your child’s TPRI test in their red folders on Monday. The test dealt with how well they recognize their letters, know their sounds, how well they can blend sounds together, if they know rhyming words, and how well they can comprehend a short story. Some of the students were even able to go on to the reading section, where they sounded out words! If any of you would like to conference or if you have any questions about the test results, please let me know.

In Phonics last week we focused on the letter A/a. We tasted apples and made a graph of everyone’s favorite. We had a tie for all three kinds! 7 students liked yellow the best, 7 liked green the best, and 7 liked red the best! We also got to make applesauce on Friday. We read a few books about apples and learned more about where apples grow, and how they are then turned into applesauce. We are continuing to do our phonics worksheets on Monday-Thursday. The students know that on Thursday, we have our test. They use privacy folders and do the worksheet all on their own! This week, we also started entering grades into our gradebook!

In math last week our focus was the months of the year. The students made a mouse month-by-month calendar that had pictures of different events that happen throughout the year.

This week in reading we read a book about flying kites, and the students focused on words that start with the S sound and the M sound. They learned a little song about Mimi Mouse and Sammy Seal. They also brought home two books that were all about the letter S. Please don’t forget to be reading with your child on Wednesday and then again on Thursday night with the books they bring home. In the past two weeks, the students learned what a verb is and worked really hard on coming up with verbs, writing verbs, and then also writing sentences that had a noun and a verb in it.

In phonics we focused on the letter N/n. We did several worksheets with the letter N and this week the students started their first reading practice with our phonics materials. They were asked to read 10 words from a list. All the words included only letters we have learned in class, so they are all words that they should be able to sound out. They will get a reading practice sheet every week with different words to sound out. The students also made a number collage for the letter N/n, where they cut out numbers in magazines and also wrote down different numbers they could think of. On Friday they got to make a nest craft.

In math this week, we worked on counting and writing the numbers. The students made a number book and looked at numbers 1-10 to see how they were similar and how they were different.

On Tuesday, we went on a field trip to the pumpkin patch in Salado. The students had a great time walking there and getting to watch a program! Then they each got a cookie and some juice, and even got to bring back their own pumpkin. Don’t forget that on Wednesday we are driving to Elgin to go to the pumpkin patch there for the whole day!

Another special treat thing we did this week, was we had Dr. Novotny come talk to us. In Social Studies the kids are learning about authority figures, so they had Mrs. Nix come talk to them one day and Dr. Novotny, our superintendent, also came and talked to them about what it’s like to be an authority figure, who are authority figures are, and how we can treat them.
