Pumpkin Patch!

This week in Reading we started a new unit which focuses on the fact that we can learn new things from books. We also talked about our five senses, practiced using them, and discussed different things that we use our different senses on. We read the story Listen, Listen about the sense of hearing and the four seasons. We also read the story My 5 Senses. We also started talking about descriptive words and sensory words. The focus letter for the week during reading time was the letter A/a. We learned a song about Andy Apple.

In Phonics this week our letter was M/m. We did our normal phonics worksheets and tests, and the students continued with their reading practices as well. We continued to work on our Teddy Bear journal and will probably finish it with it next week. Our craft for the week was making a monster!

We had a review week in math. The students practiced making patterns, counting, and going over the days of the week and the months of the year. On Tuesday, they were given a formal assessment called the TEMI. It was a timed test where the students had to flip through the pages and answer as many questions as they could before the time ran out. They did fairly well on it, for it being the first time for them to do something like that. We will do this test again later in the year.

On Wednesday we had our all-day field trip to the pumpkin patch in Elgin. We had lots of fun! It was a long bus ride, but the kids enjoyed it and they did a great job of sitting nicely in their seats. When we got to Elgin, we got to go on a Hayrack Ride, then we heard a story about a jack-o-lantern, and got to eat our sack lunches. The kids got to go into two different mazes, play on the playground, climb some hay, paint pumpkins, see some animals, and they had a tug-of-rope contest! The girls won once and the boys won once. By the time we got back to school, most of the kids were wiped out! And thank you so much to all the parents and grandparents that came with us to help out! I couldn’t have done it all without you all. Thanks again!
